BP Ultimate Diesel

On the advice of my garage I have recently filled my van up with ultimate diesel and whilst without question the engine is running better, I have concerns over how safe it is to use.

My last van I ran on shell diesel vpower for its last 6 months until the engine broke down on me (piston ceased in engine) so it has always made me worried if the feul was in part at fault or if it was just coincidence.

Can anyone put my mind at rest on this?

It's just coincidence. The ultimate just has more cleaning additives.

It's just the price that is ultimate data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

I've been using Shell V-Power for years, no issues here.

And i do ~24k miles / year

No argument there, 12p a litre more adds up data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Don't plan on using it every time, was just planning to fill the van up once a month on it

Or just chuck a can of BG244 (IIRC) in there once every 10k miles.

Do these additives really work? A search on the net confirmed that the ultimate etc fuels do make a difference (leaving aside whether the extra cost justifies it) but the response to additives was far less clear

There is absolutely no point in using this expensive diesel in anything else than performance diesels......which vans usually aren't. Save your money and use branded stock diesel.

My reading on my last MOT emissions test was nearly zero. And on my older diesel (no dpf) it was again very low.

I was told by the garage not to use "cleaning" additives in older engines. He reckoned that the engine got a build up of gunge and learned to live with it, when the cleaner gets working it detaches the gunge and, at the best, you get leaks but at worst you can bugger the engine

Could be all bollocks though
