Thanks Nigeldata:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

This is what I'm starting to think.
It seems quite a length to go to (I've seen some guides & itinvolves micro sd cards & takes about 20 mins or so I think) and notnecessarily something I'd be wholly comfortable with.
Seeing as the Kindle has a rudimentary browser I'd think that would beok for browsing forums such as this for 30 minutes or so at a time, although navigation could be an issue I guess.

It's okay for browsing - in so far as I don't really like any small device for browsing be it a Kindle or a 7" tablet or a smart phone.

I view them all okay if you have a desperate need for information but wouldn't class any as suitable for comfortable browsing - just my opinion.

I did post a pictures of AVF on my Kindle somewhile back. Here it is

                                                                                                                                        /proxy.php?image=http://www.avforums.com/forums/members/44930-albums898-picture9058.jpg&hash=898dd48f1c972bebbb81c89318d273c8

If you find that thread you will see some of my feelings about browsing.

The biggest issue will be the lack of any instant pointing device - mouse, touchscreen, nub, rollerball etc. so all field navigation and scrolling has to be done by the cursor pad.
eers,

Nigel

tablet startup time = 30-60 seconds? seriously?my ipads instant...

anyway, big diffs for me are...

ipad screen is backlit and shiny... perfect for reading in a dim room but not so great outdoors.

kindle screen 'e-paper' so you need a light in a dark room, but perfectly readable outside in the sunshine.

oh yeah - download the kindle app on your tablet and have the ability to sync between tablet/phone and kindle.... brilliant

Thanks for the advice above; I ended up getting a nook color for a very reasonable price on e-bay from a bloke just a few miles awaydata:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
I know the screen is reflective, but using the kindle app set in sepia with the brightness right down it is very easy on the eye & I've got the benefit of the web browser etc

Agreed maybe not that big.

I've not used the Kindle app on a phone or tablet but on my PC whilst it remembers the book being read it does not remober the page you are on, at least automatically, I guess there are bookmarks you can use.

So I was imagining the two scenarios

Kindle
Slide power switch - page you are reading is immediately displayedas good as instant.

Tablet (assuming the Kindle app is like the one on my PC)
Boot tablet
Locate Kindle app and select it
Kindle app starts and displays the front page of the book you are reading
Scroll through the pages to find the point you are reading

That's the difference I was trying to convey.A tablet may not be 30s but I doubt it is instant (< 1sec) either.

It's the instantness of the Kindle that I was trying to describe. For example you are reading the Kindle - the telephone goes. You put the Kindle aside and talk for 30 minutes. You pick up the Kindle slide the switch and carry on reading where you left off. There's never any shutdown, boot up, find the right application, find the right book, find the right page to be bothered about.

Cheers

Nigel

ipad/iphone and kindle all will take me to the last page i read irrespective of which device i read it on...

fact...

nheather Publish time 25-11-2019 04:53:06

The one on my PC (v1.5.0) only remembers the book, not the page - even when I only use the PC Kindle. If I read on the PC, close the application and then open, I'm presented with page 1 of the book.

fact ....

Cheers,

Nigel
