Gove wants us to give Queenie a new yacht

This has to be the most idiotic suggestion of the new year so far.data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7I know the cabinet is replete with half witted imbeciles but I think Gove crowns himself imbecillus maximus with this one.How freaking insensitive can anyone be at a time like this with 2.500.000 unemployed , hundredsof thousands of people feeling the pinch and with little money in the government coffers I can think of many other things I would rather see £60000000( the proposed figure) spent on.
If Queeniereally wants a new yacht to celebrate her Jubilee let her buy it herself.More to the point does she actually need it and why are we encouraging extravagance at a time like this?I have better suggestions- compel her to sell Balmoral and Sandringam and turn them into amusement parcs or holiday centres for the masses. If we must have a monarchy let it reflect Britain in the modern age with a similar status and lifestyle to those on Belgium , Holland, Scandinavia

Even as a Tory and Monarchy supporter, I happen to agree with you on this subject - we should not be buying the Queen a yacht.

Not so much the expense, but I just can't see why a Royal Yacht is needed.

However, one observation I would make.Whenever anyone posts about people abusing (or taking unfair advantage) of the benefits system where similar total amounts of money are involved, you tend to dismiss them stating that the sum involved is a 'drop in the ocean'.

Cheers,

Nigel

The USP of the old yacht was that it was a clear symbol of the UK when used at trade fairs and allowed for enteratinment on board.

When would you (Mr Chinese businessman) rather go after a day shaking hands, the ballroom booked by France or the Royal Yacht brought along by the UK?

I'm not sure I agree with spending £50m (or whatever) in this project at the current time, but surely it would create jobs in the UK which is what many people have been asking for...??

No the timing is not right from a perception PoV, but it would create jobs in shipyards that are having delays due to defence cuts. And there is no time like the present on promoting the UK at trade fairs.

However I would not use it for the Jubilee, as it would not be ready by then anyway!!

The queen has shown herself to be 1) cost consious and 2) in touch with the people throughout most of her life (beit now or during the war, many decades ago) so I am sure she would use it appropriately.

build a hospital or renovate some schools that badly need it instead, that would create jobs.Besides it wouldnt surprise me at all if it went to some foreign shipbuilding firm.

Really then she should slash her personal expenditure and tell her profligate progeny to do the same

I support the government's decision.I should also hope they will throw in a free captain. I hear there is one with some free time over in Italy they might want to consider for the position.

Are you kidding? It would be built somewhere else where they still have the industry...

But yeah they could market/spin it as job creation... Ahem...

Profligate progeny - I like that.

And no, she shouldn't have another yacht.
