Buying a table lamp and lightbulbs

This is loosely related to the forum, but I'm scared of GC. I am trying to buy a cheap table lamp. But the problem is you can't fit a regular lightbulb in a standard table lamp nowadays. Seriously!

You know that plastic sheath that surrounds the contacts and holds the shade in place? Incredulously, it doesn't seem to allow you to fit a standard modern bayonet light bulb. I've tried two different lamps - nothing fancy just regular lamps with shades - from both Home Base and Argos. It's mad. Basically the sheath is too tall, and modern light bulbs are too wide around the base, and prevent it from fitting. The shop assistants can't quite believe it either, but at least they have given me money back.

With the Home Base lamp, I tried applying the slightest of pressure to try to insert the bulb, and the bulb just physically broke. Back to the shop.

Argos tried to sell me a screw cap instead of bayonet. So I pointed that out first, because it was their system that had the mistake. So they found me a bayonet, and the assistant pretended it did fit, and so I touched it and the bulb just popped out. It didn't fit.

And another thing, even if a bulb had fit properly, the bulb was so large it would have been sticking out above the lamp shade anyway.

I can't believe I am the first person to noticed these problems. It's pretty basic stuff. These are just standard size Osram light bulbs - halogen or eco.

I guess these companies aren't going to sell many lamps. I think I'll try Ikea next.
