Going back to games after a looong break

I Am just wondering how you guys go about this.
I am making an effort to go through my installed games list and wrap some of them up. This month I have finished with Lara croft GOL, BF3 and 4 campaign and last month dead space 3.
I am now looking at Dark souls 1
. According to steam I have played this for nearly 80 hrs. This includes a number of restarts but even so I must be a good chunk through the game. Starting from scratch is not the answer as some of the games I am looking take 100s of hrs and so I need to make use of the progress already done if I want to finish.
After maybe 4 years   out of the game I want to go back and finish it off on my own (I will stay hollow aslast time I coop play it was full of hackers) . The thing isI can't remember the map, the story, where I am up to or what bosses I have already fought

I have this problem with many RPGs as well like Witcher or mass effect or dragon age
How do you folk find your way again on games you have put down for many years? Or am I dested to for ever be annoyed I didn't finish them

Thanks

For me I would restart it, I never went back to Witcher III and I wouldn't have a clue where I was upto now.

Yeah whilst that is the best planit's really not an option for me if I want to finish them.

You could see if there is a recap on YouTube or something like that, I have a bad habit of leaving games and never going back to them.

Something like Fallout 76 I was able to drop back in after a break but it doent seem to matter whether I remember what the quests are about anyway! But for a few other games I've just taken the decision to give up and get the disk space back. Ive got enough others in steam and other stores to start off, and I prob gave up on them for a reason. And with Windows game pass there are interesting new ones coming along too.
I must try to just work through games one by one and not keep switching around!

When saving game data , do you over write the "last save" or have you got multiple saves , if so you could go back a few "saves" and see if you pick upthe storyand refresh your memory

having said that , i started to play "deus ex mankind divided" after about a year from it , ran around for about on hour , didn't have a clue what i was doing so give up , and haven't been back it since ...

or an otheroption is , start the game again on the lowest difficulty level run through it , (making sure you don't over write the save you want to keep)and pick it back up again where you left off , but i guess this could be pain in ass if there loads hours all ready put into the game .

definitley restart dark souls. if ur good at it and still remmeber everythinmg, you'll breeze through it. watch that youtuber on dark souls too.. he plays the game so cool and really pieces together the lore. i wish i did that.

If I’ve not played it for >6 months it’s a restart or uninstall from me.

Got to be firm or you’ll never clear your backlog!

I tend to just start again if i've been away from a game for too long.
