help with new Samsung 55NU8000
HiI have purchased my first 4K HDR TV the Samsung 55NU8000 - I have my PC setup with it and its doing 4K @ 60Hz but the color is 8-Bit according to windows (Nvidia GTX650), is it possible to set 10-Bit?theres no option in the nVidia Control Panel, I have 4K HDR content I wish to watch from my PC, but I wont be getting the HDR if its 8-bit? guess I will have to USB them.
is it possible to set 10-bit in windows?
has anyone got any advice for me regarding this TV with regards to setup/settings? Im totally new to most the settings
edit: i cant get advanced picture settings (motion settings etc) working on HDMI connection to my PC???? I bought the TV so it would smooth out the motion judder and I cant?
thanks HDMI 2.0 interface cannot handle RGB 10-bit only 8-bit.
10-bit is possible via chroma sub-sampling and while this can degrade image quality on a PC, for just watching videos or playing games it's fine.
In Nvidia control panel go to Display->Change Resolution->use Nvidia Colour Settings
* change output colour format to YCC 4:2:2
* change output colour depth to 10-bit
In Windows Settings->System->Display go to Windows HD Colour Settings and in here you can force on HDR which will also emulate SDR in HDR.
Now try playing your videos.
Not really worth it given the hassle, maybe the above has gotten easier via other methods I'm not aware of & some media players may now auto switch on HDR in Windows, try Kodi or MPC-BE. I'd use the media player built into the TV instead to play such videos, look at rtings review for suggested motion settings.
Things like smooth motion are normally disabled with PC modes, some PC media players include their own versions like Kodi and MPDN. Ive tried PLEX but I cant get it to work and it doesnt seem to support 4K (well its not importing 4K content into the library) - guess IM gunna HAVE to get a media player? I've no idea about Plex client on the TV, Plex likes to transcode and you don't want that.
Serviio might be a better option and play using stock DLNA media player on the TV, Emby is another Plex alternative that at least allows fully disabling transcoding in it's settings and I think there is a Samsung client for that too.
If the network media player on the TV wont play 4K HDR content then yeah you need something else, least hassle option is AppleTV 4K with InFuse media player, there are others, the ATV costs a premium but it generally just works. I wont buy anything Apple.. Im looking at the X99 as it has a RK3399 and is decent, but I would like to try and get something with a HDD installed or space to install one as I dont want to use a external HDD for storage, I would probably like to have a NAS that both the media payer and PC can access, so I can transfer movies from PC to NAS to stream on BOX
