Plex server on Nvidia Shield v xpenology on Celeron NUC

Hi, for the first time I am using my Plex server on my Shield to stream while I am away from home.
Movies play ok although not at a great resolution, but I am using an iPad.

It seems that after playing for a few hours the picture breaks up. I stop leave it, the it plays again ok.

I don’t know whether it’s the network speed, I am using 4G, or the plex server on the shield is getting overloaded.

Then I remembered I managed to get xpenology working on my DN2820FYKH with N2820. It was a bit of a fluke. I am not sure if I overwrote the boot usb stick. So I might need to create it again. I did briefly set up Plex, but never tried it remotely.

So my question is would using the nuc be a better server than the shield?

I have my media on a DS414, Plex doesn’t work well on it.

Thanks for any input.

Note, I am not looking to spend any money, I have a couple of devices, & the nuc is not being used.

Can't comment on the Nuc but I have been using one of my shields to run a second plex server for when I am away with work and TBH it has been pretty rock steady both on 4g and hotel wifi even when abroad (mostly Germany)

If you have a newer iPad I would recommend infuse 6 pro. It integrates with Plex perfectly but stops the Shield needing to transcode and uses the iPads hardware instead. Works flawlessly for me on Apple TV, iPhone XR, iPhone XS and 2019 iPad

I suppose I’ll just have to try the nuc

As for the iPad I don’t want to pay for anything. It’s a company iPad

It’s just a case of would the server using a celeron processor be better than the shield server

Thanks for both responses

A celeron NUC can't even play larger 1080p x265 so I doubt it would work at all well at transcoding if that's what you're looking for.

Does VLC on the iPad not play files natively?

If the celeron wont play larger files, then that has answered my question, so I probably won’t bother setting it up.

I installed VLC to the iPad but it seems to want me to load files onto the iPad, but perhaps I am missing something.

As suggested previously infuse had plex in the menu, so it found my files, but unless I upgraded to pro it wouldn’t play.

Is there a way to use an external player ie vlc from the plex interface?

Someone else will have to assist you with that I'm afraid. I don't use my iPad for media at all.

I just knew VLC had an app so thought it might work, sorry if I steered you wrong.

The NUC, that's the reason I got rid of it and replaced it with the Shield. I was encoding my own video at the time and 720p x265 was fine but 1080p and it was just buffering, stuttering etc.

My problem is I don’t like getting rid of things, the Nuc is doing nothing, I just wanted to find another use for it.

Thanks

Won't cost you anything to try it.

That’s true.
