I have watched the original for comparison, fortunately before watching this new version. Everything is a lot better, the audience has more solid grasp of the story. The original version is plainly preaching to be religious in order to fight the evil spirit. While the new version the protagonist must deal with something stronger and more motivated evil spirit. At the beginning there is confusion about two haunting spirits: the mother and the granny. Are they in the same bad spirit team? And it turns out they are from different sides. Without too much thingking we can misunderstand several key plots. About which spirits from which side and what they do to the family. I'm not easily impressed by jumpscare and twisted ghost appearance, and easily identify the original idea of it, but more by the flow, atmosphere and story built into the movie. I expect this movie has stronger background and here it is occultism comes in. It makes the story feel solid and realistic. Religion is at the weak side according to my opinion, it competes with secret sect and popular/traditional myth. The actors and actress are good and can deliver the terror to the audiences. But they're not convincing enough to be a poor family. How they lose their belongings for their mother's medication should be reflected more by their daily expression. And they don't look scared enough facing the revealing facts about dark secret they discover. I expect more depression in the atmosphere where their two younger brothers balance with funny interaction. No blood, gore or gut tearing scene is no problem at all, this is not a horror to make you sick. And one important thing no self mumbling like many Indonesian TV cinemas. I say I can recommend to many people watching this movie. Don't hope scary movie but good horror plot.
