Very true about the alignment - for example someone thinking they are aiming straight at it, but are actually standing shut/closed. There is the tendency to to throw the shoulders out and over the ball coming through impact - hooks and slices depending on the hand action through impact.

Noticed you mentioned Royal Liverpool earlier - that's a pretty high end club/course right there

Never played it myself though. Played some good courses over the years though - some peachy courses round East Lothian way :-D

Unfortunately I am not a member at RL, though it is pretty much on my doorstep.

I do get a few chances to play it for free though. The last time being when my son was playing there in a junior match and I just happened to have my clubs with me just in case their junior organiser asked me to play (which I had heard happens from time to time)

A few years ago they were after members and I could have joined but now it is back on the Open rota there is no chance.

I am lucky that we have an abundance of great courses in the NW. Wallasey is very close to me and the Southport courses, S&A, Birkdale, Hillside etc are less than an hour away. They were all in our league when I used to play in the Colts team (under 25)

I have never played in Scotland but it is certainly on my 'things to do' list.

Well East Lothian is hosting this years open (Muirfield). Was there for one of the practice days way back in '92' when i was 14

Although i stay in Fife nowadays i lived in Edinburgh most of my life, except for stints down in Chester, Wales and Brum. Played some nice courses. But i used to have a friend who was a member of the St Andrews new club - directly to the right of the 18th green on the old course - and he worked as a marshal at the open there and the Dunhill cup when it still existed. I used to get under the ropes on occasion and stand beside the press which was pretty cool, and some other nice perks with him.

Lost touch after he emigrated to Canada with his work and bird

I didn't realise East Lothian was Muirfield That is one of my favourite Open courses along side Birkdale and very exclusive from what I have been told.

Scotland is a mecca for golf. I love links courses, even though I am a member of a parkland course (Bromborough). I wish I could play links golf all the time.

I have been to every Open at Birkdale since 1976 (showing my age) and my favourite memory was actually walking into Tom Watson, who was still holding the Claret Jug after the presentation, in the the car park in 1983.

Then at Hoylake in 2006 he actually ignored all the autograph hunters and made a bee line straight to my young daughter and started talking golf with her.

I can't wait for next year, though I hope the wind blows a bit so Tiger doesn't knock it round with his 5 iron like last time.

Tiger pretty much back to his best again eh. Muirfield has been extended a bit on a few holes i read a couple of weeks ago. Yep it is mega exclusive, even Payne Stewart bless him, couldn't get a quick round when he was US open champ many moons ago Bit pretentious if you ask me, but rules is rules i guess lol.

Watson is one of the few pros autographs i never managed to get years ago unfortunately. But can't believe he missed out on the open '09' i think it was. Not been at an open myself since St Andrews '95' (Daly)

Will take my lad when he's a bit older, hopefully he will turn out to like golf too.

England has some stunning links golf also...

Would love one day to play Birkdale and Lytham, unlikely though

Yep, Tiger looks back to his best unfortunately. I think he will go on to break Jacks record now. He used to be a hero of mine but his off course, and also his behaviour on the golf course (spitting, swearing etc) has put me right off him.

When the Open was at Hoylake I would get to the course every morning a 7am to watch his practice rounds in front of about 20 fans. It was so interesting seeing him plot his way around the links. His 2 iron 'stinger' really was a joy to behold. The noise of the strike and shape of the shot was something I couldn't do if I played golf for a million years.

Watsons loss at the Open was the most heart breaking moment of any sporting event I can remember. One hard bounce stopped him creating history and I don't think we will ever see the likes of that again.

Yep it was unfortunate, because it was a good iron shot he struck considering. Just had "that" length of putt left - again :banghead:

Reckon Woods must be the best ball striker of all time imho. I only saw him 94 at Turnberry and 95 when he was still an "Amateur". In 94 he was on the practice ground hitting what looked like easy 7 irons, and remember thinking wow. Big high and  soft draws, looked amazing.

He has his work cut out to beat the bear's record with the huge amount of talent nowadays - but he is the only one who will do it if anyone can. His off course antics are/were ridiculous, but i do prefer him to Rory tbh. Not to keen on RM's attitude these days, extremely arrogant and huffy attitude since he won a couple of the biggies if you ask me.

Is the stinger a sort of low draw and/or fade ?... He really can do anything with a golf ball, from a different world - genius.

Heard the commentators talking about it on occasion but not seen it in real life.

Does anyone have suggestions on golf shoes - mine have split and are not repairable so I am looking for some new ones

The only problem is my right ankle has a very prominent ankle bone on the outside due to an injury years ago and almost all of the shoes I tried over the weekend were putting pressure on the underside of the bone to the point that some of the shoes were unbearable to even stand still, let alone walk in them as the shoe was digging into the bone so much

Up to now, the only pair I have found that are not causing me problems are the Adidas Adizero 6 spike version (didn't try the tours as they were another £50) but I am waiting for a place to get me the Puma Amp Cell Fusion shoes to try, which should be by Wednesday

Unless the Puma shoes are a lot more comfortable than the Adidas, I suspect the Adidas will be the ones I choose as I have found an offer for them at £57 instead of the usual £75

But are there any other I should consider - I have tried various Nikes, other Adidas (Powerband, ATV) but not any Footjoy yet as there were no styles that I liked although if they are the most comfortable then I will consider them

I tried out a few different 7-irons at the range last night as I do need to look at getting a proper full set of irons (I've currently only got 5,7,9 and SW).

Sadly for my pocket, the Ping ones felt easily the best for me!
