Well you find out there is a difference between traction and grip. So a 4 wheel drive does not improve braking only move off slightly.

A good set of winter tyres will out do any 4 wheel drive with summer tyres.

So the best option is to get winter tyres. Even better both.

Many people make the mistake of being over confident with 4wheel drive. You find many  taxi companies in Alaska use snow tyres and rear wheel drive cars.

It's a shame they didn't do that x1 video with 4wd on winter tyres too as a final comparison.

I still prefer 4wd for its grip all year round and I probably would swap my tyres if we get enough snow days but with one or two it is not worth it.

I previously had an escort that I had snow tyres for when I lived somewhere we got more snow and they were great.  I remember taking some friends up the pass in Ambleside never having driven it before.  A range rover came sliding down at which point we chickened out and turned round.

Those particular tyres worked best as they held onto the snow in the treads and snow on snow groups like it does when you roll a snow ball.

If you get the wrong type of snow though it's not necessarily as good. In Canada you got quite "dry" snow that you brushed away that doesn't grip as well

Probably the best all season tyre you can buy currently if you don't want the hassle of changing tyres from summers to winters and vice versa. Living in the Highlands, I had the CrossClimates  on my Audi A4 (B7) and they were 90% as good as my winter tyres in winter and 95% as good as my summer tyres in summer. However I upgraded to an B9 A4 in the summer which comes with 245/35/19 wheels and all season tyres don't come in those wheel sizes. Its back to Nokian WR A4 winter tyres, IMHO those are one of the best winter tyres you can buy

Modern winter don’t just work with snow. They have extract silicone in them. So at down to 7 degrees they give an extra 1m stopping distance.

At around -2 degrees they off great grip and handle frost and ice without concerns

Further they can lift more water as they have deep tread. So for example last weekend we went from Northampton to Birmingham and so 5 accidents involving acuplaing. Winter tyre handled the conditions with ease.

Have have a four wheel drive Volvo XC90 I would go with winter tyres first rather than the 4wd . Better value imho.

If winter handled summer temperatures better i’d Keep them on all year around.

I love the comments with 4 wheels drive vehicles. So funny.
I'd prefer to drive a 2 wheel drive vehicle with winter tyres on as opposed to a 4x4 without.
