firstly I preface this with I know NOTHING about cars and can’t even drive them.

A friend of mind purchased a second hand Vauxhall meriva earlier this year.

All was fine to start with but after a few months it just stopped starting.

On a couple of occasions this has been when away from home.  Recovery sevices called and by time they arrived then disconnected and reconnected the batter the car started and was fine

This carried on for a few weeks
Wouldn’t start.  Disconnect battery.  Reconnect.  Would start

The AA chaos said they couldn’t find a fault

The local garage said couldn’t find a fault

It was even given once over by chap who manages the fleet of cars where they work and again all fine

Then one day it stopped and stopped for good.  No disconnecting and reconnecting would get it started

So they replaced the battery and all was fine.  The weekly issue stopped.  The car started each and every time.  No problems.

Until today. It just will not start again

So does anyone have any idea what it may be ? Or where we could direct the garage to look as never found a fault

Cheers

Battery probably isn’t charging properly if it started first time with new battery.

Do the lights on the dash come on? If they do, do they go out when the key is turned or do they stay static without flickering?
The problem could be an earthing problem or a starter motor fault, or even an ignition switch fault.

Who changed the battery, the owner or a mechanic? Could be corroded/dirty terminals if they weren't cleaned when it was changed.

As @car-man suggests, a process of elimination is required. As well as his suggestion put the headlights on & then turn the key. If the headlights dim, or don't light in the first place, it's a battery/connection/charging issue. If they don't dim then it's a fault getting power to, or the starter motor itself.

I'm amazed these checks need passing on to a mechanic, it's pretty basic stuff!
