its the pads that are more than likely to fail an mot if they are less than 1.5mm thick, they would be classed as a dangerous defect do not drive.

Where people think MOT testers are putting advisories for no reason its usually the inside face that is absolutely knackered. Like this (these are a pass and advise ...)

Just had to replace the discs on my GTi having had warnings for a bit - They outside looked pretty reasonable through the alloys - a bit of a ridge but nothing serious I was a bit skeptical but I trust my mechanic to tell me the truth.
When I picked up the car he showed me the old ones - the inside face looked like it had been at the bottom of a river for a couple of years - we were both a bit shocked!
