Unhappy with MOT

i have a good place for MoTs but was late getting it done and off work ill so had to use someone local.
It passed but they didn't provide the reports that the good one does so even after I retire I will still go there even if I have to hire a small car for a day.

You can book mots with council testing centres that have no repair facilities and ergo no ‘incentive’ to fail the car.

The place I normally use do little things beyond the MoT and let me know if any things will need doing in a while etc.

TBH I would get the pads & the discs replaced & the calipers cleaned & checked as well as tyres in the interest of safety. Those tyres will not be giving full grip in the wet. Any question on the brakes & I'm getting them fixed if I'm driving the car. A few hundred quid saved on repairs is not worth risking your life and others on the road & pavements.

Except that if it genuinely fails so severely that it cannot be legally driven away, the council centre can't repair it and the customer has to recover it.

That's more difficult. If you think they're actually badly dishonest then it's trading standards or one of those TV programs that goes after rogue traders. Apart from that, try and find a better garage to service your cars and do MOTS. I've found if you get all your servicing and MOTs done at the same place they can be kinder in the MOT test.

And hopefully you have reported each MOT centre for that? It is still dodgy practice and I’m pretty sure it is not in the instructions linked by @car-man.

I get what you mean but really everybody should expect the same service from every MOT testing station. The discretion is about professional judgement and experience - not whether or not you have given the attached servicing garage money for servicing.

i don't know if you have done your cv boot yet but the straps they use can be a bit of a pig to tighten without the right tool.
i struggled with a strap on my daughters C4 a few weeks ago, you need either the right crimping tool or a pair of old fashioned pincers the type for pulling nails out of wood
something like these

don't try to use cable ties they can be useless you can't get them tight enough to hold the cv boot into place ( i tried it didn't work )

i might be teaching you how to suck eggs but i thought it might be worth a mention
