Social media is a serious societal problem/issue we are facing primarily because of the nature of the speed at which societies have and are adopting and adapting their behaviours around these technologies and facilities.
{woffle}
There have always been instances and events within human societies where changes occur and previous generations ways of doing things or looking at the world were developed and established in a different environment to what they were then faced with. Their children however developed and establish their skills and world views in those new environments.

At the same time as these changes occur, there is a period of adjustment where adults with the experience and knowledge of social etiquette adapt rules of behaviour to best meet the demands of social cohesion and the practicalities of living together.

Every adult takes their previous understanding of right and wrong, what works and doesn't, what causes problems and what is useful and attempt to make sense of how those fit and work in any new environment they find themselves in.
Over time societies evolve a general consensus of what works based on the many and cumulative mistakes and successes of it's individuals and groups of adults.
Once that general consensus is reached, there is a rough guide to be able to best teach their children how to behave in positive and productive ways.

Those same processes have been going on within our societies throughout our history, but we are now reaching a point where the rate of change of our environments in the way we interact and work is greater than the natural/intellectual mechanisms we have both evolved with and evolved to adapt and cope.{/woffle}

*** Key point *** (for IG )

In simple terms, we have reached a point that new changes and challenges are repeatedly occurring before our ability to react, adapt our social behaviour as adults ..... never mind be able to teach, inform and guide our children in how to behave and cope.

***
I'm not suggesting I or anyone else has a valid solution or plan to address these issues nor do I automatically take the position of banning or restricting development, access and use of these new tools and technologies.
What I am suggesting is that these new technologies have a significant impact both positive and negative on our societies and that both aspects need to be thoroughly explored, investigated and discussed rather than dismissed as either not a problem or not something we can or should bother investing time and effort in addressing.

Putting aside the raft of positives.
The negatives of the internet have always existed in the darker human behaviour, from misinformation like flat earth theorist to individuals being hurtful with their poison pen letters the internet is just another tool of delivery.

Safe and secure , when the basics are left to exploit and use by anyone ( individual or political use ) for gain .

I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

Facebook security breach: Up to 50m accounts attacked - Up to 50m Facebook accounts attacked
