The OP is clearly struggling to get out running and is looking to lose weight, not become a runner. Therefore, it is possible he is not finding running that exciting and there are lots of options for exercise to help him lose weight instead of running.

I train several competitive runners and help many others in the gym and can say with confidence that running does not train the body (as a whole) that well.  There is little loading on the arms, shoulders and back other than limb weight.  It is also really common for runners to have weak hamstrings, weak glutes, weak core amongst other things.  Working on these weaknesses universally results in runners breaking PBs and reducing injuries.

Keeping in with the context of the OP exercise is not optimal for weight loss, I wish I could say otherwise but simply isn't true.  Although we are all different I would exercise contributes, at maximum, 20% towards weight loss and that is only if the exercise is of an appropriate nature, intensity, durations and regularity.  Weight is gained and lost in the kitchen, not in the gym, not in the park or on the track.

Hi Glyn

I think perhaps you have misread the OP's intention..

I quote:

I think he needs more motivation to go out running, hence why I said it was a good idea to join a club which helps with motivation..

Sorry for delay in replying. Really appreciate your comments.

I have got back into running, it took about 5 sessions to get back into doing my targeted 5k. Although came down with man flu over christmas so took almost 3 weeks off. That surprisingly didn't really effect my stamina, only dropped a bit. I'm happy where I am now and have a good balance of doing weights and running. Only negative is the dark mornings so am mostly doing treadmill. Won't be long now until it's light from 7am, can't wait as I am fortunate to live near the coast and also country so really do enjoy getting out there.

I have noticed there is a running thread so will post on there from now on.

Thanks again for the advice!
