I have not seen any reviews showing the wrist type watches to be accurate in terms of HR.  An example here:

Samsung Gear Fit review: Interface and fitness | Gadgets Reviews | TechRadar

I use a Polar H7 strap which works with loads of apps, Andriod and IOS plus still gives out a frequency that can be picked up by every bit of gym equipment I have tried it with.  It is also waterproof.

The smart watches need another year or two of development.

I've been looking at upgrading my Garmin FR10 and have been looking at multi sport watches over the weekend. Which Garmin do you have?

I'm thinking of picking up the FR920XT with HRM.

I have the 910 which was what the 920 has replaced. The 920 looks very nice but I have seen the 910 at some low prices since the 920 was released so may be worth a look.

Yep I saw the 910 with HRM on Amazon for £220. I was tempting to get it, but I quite like the new features on the 920 like being able to use for indoor workouts, Activity Tracker and swimming drills. And I quite like the sound of ConnectIQ.

I can get the 920 with HRM for £340
