I use a qnap 412, as old as the hills, wirelessly to my Nvidia Shield, 4k HDR all the way via Kodi on the Shield.

I'll probably use Kodi myself for Atmos content, through my Xbox One X, if Infuse doesn't have Atmos by the time I install ceiling speakers.

I've decided not to drill into the next room. Instead I'll run Cat 6 to a cupboard under the stairs I'm intending to build. That way the cupboard can double as the server/hub for all the networked gear in the house (NAS, Hue, etc.).

I’ve got the DS918  with a couple of new 10tb Barracuda Pro's and a couple of older 3tb Barracuda drives that I had from my previous 2 bay NAS. You can mix drive sizes as long as you use Synology SHR raid.

I am also using it mainly for 4k media serving to an APTV4K with Infuse Pro and an Android media box (Zidoo). Synology nas's are great, they just work, rock solid stable, software is brilliant, low power consumption and low maintenance.

I would definetly echo what others have said and buy the biggest drives your budget allows. 4K files take up ~50gb on average and they will soon eat your drive space before you know it.

Make sure you have it on a wired lan infrastructure both for the nas and the Apple TV for smooth playback/ffw/rewind of 4K files.

Yea, I'm definitely sold on the idea of both wired infrastructure and large drives. I'll probably go with 8TB. Having to set up all the wiring does mean it'll probably kick it into next month before I make use of the Synology, but that's not really an issue. I'd rather wait and have a much better set up
