A7III .. or?

So I really want an upgrade to my G85. Its just not fun to use due to the flakey AF video autofocus, poor light performance and the bokeh not satisfying my desires.  (working with native panny primes)

The only camera I've seen tick most of my boxes is the A7iii. I want a camera which can:

1. 4k video (cos i crop AF in post)
2. Low light performance
3. Reliable video and still autofocus
4. Budget lens selection (eying the two Tamron zooms)
5. Articulating screen ... this is sadly the dealbreaker so I was thinking of getting a Ninja Atomos to go with it  


Are there any other cameras or systems I should be considering if I'm going to likely be grabbing the Ninja Atomos. ?
The upcoming Sony A7Siii does have me worried as I'd hope it doesn't match the A7iii's image resolution... otherwise it'd just be the superior camera.

Any advice please? Also any work arounds for the lack of articulating screen? I'd ideally like to be a bit vloggy and the A7iii just doesn't look like it can do it.

The a6400 lacks image stabilisation which is a huge bummer

Which Tamron lenses are you looking at?  I can only find one Tamron FE-mount lens with the 28-75/2.8 but at just under £900 I wouldn't really count that as a budget lens.  Which Panasonic primes are you using?  The reason I ask is that you've mentioned low light and shallow depth of field are important but if you go from fast primes to fast zooms you're likely to lose around two stops which means low light performance and depth of field will be similar.

Even with an articulating screen a camera with the bulk of an A7 doesn't seem a great choice for vlog use, you've mentioned the a6400 not being suitable for the lack of stabilisation but not the a6500 which has both stabilisation and an articulating screen plus a fast autofocus system.  Depending on lens choice though you may not see a large advantage because the sensor is only one stop better than the Panasonic.

The video autofocus of the Panasonic is pathetic.

It’s low light performance even with the 25mm f1.7 is meh.. I think full frame is the way forward for me bowl

TBH m4/3 systems make for great vlogging cameras but it sounds as though you have your heart set on FF. The A7iii is one hell of a camera, one of the best bang for buck new cameras. However, I wouldn't really call most of the lenses budget, plus being full frame lenses they are going to be bigger and heavier. It's all about compromises and only you can decide what you're willing to compromise on.

There's no doubt that the upcoming A7SIII will be a better video camera, after all that's the main focus of the 'S' range, however whether it will be as good an all rounder we'll have to wait and see.
