Yeah, that's along the right lines, but that's a little pricey, and probably more hi-tech than I need. My first stop was ebay, and you can pick up button cameras on there fro a tenner upwards, but i know they're likely to be crap. I've since discovered that you can get body cams about the size of a lighter that clip on your front, which would probably do, but I don't know if the phone thing is possible with these.... early stages of looking into this....

Just to clear up what I need again - stills only, no video or audio required, though I understand that most decent quality ones will do these as well....

I agree with the mobile option as phone cameras can take great quality shots and crucially no-one really thinks twice about someone who is taking photos with a mobile.

Action cameras are compact and wearable but in the settings you describe I think they'd stand out.  Spy type cameras do exist but the problem is that not only is the quality quite poor but they tend to suffer extreme distortion which doesn't sound like it would be suitable for your use.

I enjoy street photography. My advise is to do it just as obviously as possible. Don’t be shy about it.

I still enjoy taking my Mamiya Medium format out for those kind of shots.

The moment you try to conceal what you are doing, or do it from a long distance with zoom lenses you draw attention to yourself. Doing it covertly is even worse.

Last answer = best answer.

I think the reason most people get noticed is that they're *trying* to do it furtively.

I've been trying to shoot street for years with cameras which are nowhere near discreet (though admittedly not artillery piece lenses).

My limitation has been talent, not getting hassled for it

I tend to agree - as long as it's obvious that you aren't sticking your camera in folks faces you are likely to be ignored
