How do you know that the lens borrowed by the OP was ‘L’ glass, it might have been but it doesn’t say so, but you argue as if it definitely was?

Cheers,

Nigel

No probs, I would probably have made the same assumption given the body was a 7D.

Cheers,

You don’t say what the quality of the lens was, but given the camera body used it could well be a top of the range lens (like Canon L glass - what colour was the lens?).

Referencing Canon (but other makes are just as good) you should try to borrow from their more affordable range (the ones that have three digits like 600D, 650D, 700D etc.) and a basic F5.6 70-200 lens and see if you are happy with the results.  I say this because that is what your indicated budget would buy.  If that is good enough than great, if not then you either need to increase your budget significantly or abandon the idea.

Cheers,

Nigel

Thanks for all the advice guys. We went for a Nikon D300s with a Nikon AF-s DX Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR 2 lens. 1st impressions are good, she'll test it probably over the next few weeks
