Cycling ....advice needed on a mountain bike

Hi all....any cycling gurus out there that can advise on whether a Whistle Patwin 1863d is any good for casual road use and forest trails. It costs around the £300 mark and I like the fact it is a 29er and looks pretty cool too. Am I being stupid here.....should I be focusing on the big brand names instead?
