If you're learning Java on it's own, the i5 4GB RAM will be enough. But, if you're going to learn a database as well such as Oracle, get the i5 8GB RAM.

But the i7 will always be the best place for a programmer because you don't know what Application\software you'll be running in a year time. So, i7 is a safe bet

Chukwe agree with 8gb but seeing the Surface Pro 4 is the latest Skylake processor, it will easily be able to handle databases such as SQL or Oracle and anything else you throw at it. Personally I think the upgrade to the Core I7 would be an unnecessary extra cost unless of course money is no object

I received my Surface Pro 4, i5, 256, 8GB RAM this morning after a delay. I also bought the dock, and of course the type cover.

The dock is a pleasure as it is small and compact and can be setup anywhere.  A bit heavy but should fit easily in a bag to travel with.  The keyboard is a complete new arrangement and hopefully from here on all type covers will be like this.  Easy and really comfortable to type on.

The Surface Pro 4 just works!  So far I have not had one of the problems I have read about.  It is fast (superfast in comparison to my old SP3 which was i5, 128, 4GB) The screen is excellent.  I still have to install all my apps and desktop programs that I normally use but so far I am supremely happy with my SP4.

I am very happy. It is fast and responsive and Windows Hello suits me down to the ground as I hate passwords and pins. And it works flawlessly. The new Edge cast media to device is a boon as it also just works. There really is nothing negative to report as I have had no issues from the get go.

It could be because I downloaded the latest Windows 10 with update from MSDN plus the drivers and utilities for SP4 from Microsoft and did a clean install.

My SP4 was fully charged this morning and I have been working on it today, doing some word docs., excel docs. and research on the web as well as posting on different forums. This afternoon I watched a movie and at the moment I have 48 minutes left and the battery saver has kicked in. So I do not think I have a battery problem?

I now have 11% left or 54minutes. Battery saver makes a big difference at the end but screen pretty dark. I am leaving everything as is to see exactly how long it will go for. I will then charge it again.

Thanks for the great review Voucher, I also pulled the trigger today and will collect my pro4 tomorrow afternoon.

I went for the same model as you have. I'm hoping the battery will last as long as my iPad if it does I'll be more than happy with that.

Also hoping it will work as well as my iPad does in doing the things just as well as I do with the iPad as I use my tablet more than my laptop.
