Which Micro SD card for Sony HD Handycam?
Hi, I have a Sony HD Handycam and wanting to know what the best affordable and most reliable Micro SD card to get?Also what size storage for 2 hours of HD video,
Requirements:
Record around 2 hours of continuous HD video,
Thanks in advance, It will depend on the quality you are shooting at. A table in your handbook should advise.
A SDXC card should work OK. Format in the camera. A 64Gb card should give you better than 2 hours.
You may need to run the camera from an external source because the battery could empty within the two hours.
As for make, any well known make should not let you down. Are class 10 cards better? YES. The class shows the read/write speed and Class 10 would be needed for 4K and Slo-Mo recording.
I think MP4 also expects Class 10 I would buy one with an SD card adaptor, even if you are not planning to use it. They are only a few pence more and if your micro slot fails on your reader (which sometimes they do), you can use the standard SD slot. Class 10 is a safe bet for higher def. later(future-proofing), although most 4K camcorders specify U3....and SDXC,since there is more data to record.
You need to check the address-limit imposed by yr camcorder.... that "Battery-time" may also be an issue.... You've not said which Sony Camcorder this is for . . . HD rather implies an older model. Perhps this is s/h...?
I agree you should buy memory that includes the adaptor - always useful.
Reputable sellers are available, but avoid sellers that bulk-buy. . . . alt: try a video seller that has a shop where they sell the whole range of gear... they are unlikely to have rogue stock ( this appears to be the size you order, but may only record half-capacity - i.e. it's a smaller device with some fiddle to spoof a larger capacity ).
The only "pure" test is to set the camcorder recording a clock, (set to 12),then let it record the next 2-hours..... Format in the camcorder will erase this.... but you will then know for certain themax. duration of recording, by checking the files. It is common for these to be split into shorter "takes" - so don't be surprised there is more than one file for a 2-hr session.

SDHC cards formatted to FAT32 have a file size limitation of 4GB resulting in multiple files from long continuous recording sessions. Would these be ok? Should work fine. Both types of cards (as well as any other types) will have a 4Gb per file size limit as this is a restriction of FAT32. ExFAT or NTFS is required for >4Gb single files, but these are not often supported by camcorders.
However the 4Gb limit is not an issue as the camcorder just creates a new file and continues recording where the previous file left off, normally with little or no noticeable gap when playing back the files - which I'm sure Terfyn etc. will confirm.
