Thanks for the quick reply. Stupid question -  arcing noise, what is it like? Could it be the crackling / electro static noise in hearing but don't know what to call it!

Also do you know of hand if the switch needs soldered. I've done plenty pc and laptop repairs but never soldered. Would be comfortable replacing parts as long as they  weren't soldered.

Yes, "arcing" is a crackling-type noise.
The switch does need soldered.

Update, we emailed toshiba and they fixed the hardware fault with the switch for free (out of warranty). Could possibly be a known defect if they are fixing a 4 year old TV for free.

It is...and they are.
Toshiba are one of the better manufacturers (if not the best) for out of warranty repairs in the UK.

I know this is a very old thread, but I've just bought one of these secondhand and naturally it has 2.1.51.2 firmware which, like other posters in this thread I have been unable to update via the website - does anyone here still have a copy of the special version of firmware that toshiba used to supply on USB? I need to get hold of that version as the one on the website will not update on my set and its is now driving me mad knowing that there was once a fix out there, which I now cant find!

Replying to my own post - in order to try and help anyone else who like me stumbles upon this thread - my partner has now found a copy of version 2.1.70.0 and that WORKS. As a public service for anyone else struggling to update an older AV series TV my partner has now uploaded the file to the Internet archive (Archive.org) where you should be able to find it with a simple search for Toshiba AV series firmware.
