River is part regular entertaining police story. The biggest plus goes to the incredible acting. Every actor blows me away, in every scene. Unfortunately, the main character is a disturbed man who suffers from hallucinations that bother him, but also the viewer, to the point where all credibility is lost and a lot of the sympathy will be gone.
That is not the actor's fault, because he plays this character flawlessly. However, his illness and his hallucinations add so much to the character, but nothing to the story and what surprises the most, is how this man can keep doing his work (which he does great somehow). This series is one of many that falls into its own trap, by trying to be unique and special, while without that, it would have been not special, but just simply very, very good.
If you watch it for a compelling story, it will be mediocre. If you watch it for the character, their development and relations, be amazed.
