Hi All,

I'm looking at a used X5 x40d with 84k miles on the clock.

I've not bought a car with this high mileage before, it's a 2011 model registered in January 2011. So It's done about 10k a year which is what I would expect mileage wise for a car that age. It's going for 14.5k but I'll be trading in our old Qashqai against that cost a stumping up the rest cash.

Is there anything to look out for? 2 years ago I bought myself a 3 series BMW and since then just fell in love with BMW and don't really want anything else.

Is there anything to look out for in buying a car with kind of mileage on it? From the MOT checks I did on the gov website it all checks out and never had anything major (a small oil leak on the 3rd MOT and worn tires once ) picked up.

Any advice on it?

The X5 is so far ticking all the boxes mainly in the boot department of being able take the 4 of us away on holidays with a buggy in the boot and not need a roof box.

A quick google suggest timing chains are an issue. Nothing specific to your model, but quite a few other models. Maybe worth changing

X40d doesn't use the N47 engine with timing chain problems, its a 6 pot N57 which has very few recorded failures. Either way buying a BMW of that age considering its price when new I'd make sure it has a warranty.

ps. It's not just a case of changing the chain on these engines as it sits at the back of the engine so its gearbox off, engine out to replace at much cost.

Yeah my 3 series has the N47 engine (apparently the updated one with the new fly wheels) regular servicing and good oil and not thrashing the engine and you should be OK.

Back to the X5, I have thought of warranty though. Are third party warranties OK or should it generally be a BMW official extended warranty?

Generally if bought from a dealer you have some warranty.
The second-hand car I bought has a problem, what are my rights?
However you would have to prove the car was bought and not fit for purpose

The 3 litre diesel engines are pretty bulletproof. My current M57 has 157k miles on it. My last one had 162k. The GF’s N57 had over 90k when she sold.

Not had experience of BMW warranty but I was given a 12 month warranty with Warranty Direct when I bought my 330D nearly 6 years ago. I've claimed a new DSC unit and two new rear wheel bearings in the past 3 or so years. Total for all 3 bits of work was around £4k.5, I paid around 40-50% with Warranty Direct picking up the rest.

Not sure how it compares with BMW but I pay around £130 a year, each year the %age Warranty Direct pay out reduces due to age / mileage. In each case I've provided evidence of regular servicing as per their T&Cs before they approve the claim, very quick and problem-free process. From my experience, they've been very good to deal with.

BMW warranty is pretty good, but i should imagine it’ll be in the region of £50-70 / month for that car / age / mileage.

If you tap the details into the BMW warranty page, it’ll give you a quote.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. So nothing really to worry about this age\mileage then as long as the log book and service history checks out?
