Ford Focus starting problems

Just posting here in case anyone has any ideas about a problem on my car (Focus diesel 1.6 TDCi).
Until recently was a good starter, but just before Christmas developed a problem where it would start, then immediately cut out. Fuel line was replaced as I was told air was leaking in.
However, still having problems with it. Will cut out almost immediately on cold start, unless I give it plenty of revs. If it does cut out, almost impossible to re-start.
Battery appears to turn engine over nicely, but have not had it properly tested. Could battery be weak?
Any ideas?

Cutting out would say to me that its a fuel issue.

I put the car in diagnostic mode, and it reported fault code E510. Does that mean anything to anyone?
Google searches have proved inconclusive.

Could be an air leak in the fuel system, maybe fuel filter.

Could also be a crank sensor fault, you need to get a proper diagnostic check as often these manual code checks can be misleading.

ask them to check the fuel pump is not disintegrating it happed to my focus and it knackers the whole fuel system and it all needs to be replaced at the same time IE pump, lines and injectors

Well when I first got this problem before Christmas, I took it to a garage, and they replaced the fuel line as they informed me that air was leaking in to it. That has proved to be a waste of money as I now have exactly the same problem. Car currently sitting on the drive, refusing to start.

Are there specific tests can be done on the pump to check its health? As I understand, this car doesn't have a pump in the fuel tank.

Although having said that, if it was fuel pump related, would I not get problems when accelerating (lumpy performance etc.). Once the car's going, it drives fine.

Just that a fuel pump is bloody expensive to replace, so I've got to be sure.

I'd say this was in injector issue, when googling the error code I came across a forum where a guy had your exact issue, he had the injectors replaced and all was fine.

You don't say how old the car is or if the garage you took the car to was a Ford dealer. Also, has the car got a Ford service history?

You could spend a shed load if the garage cannot sort the fault but I'd suggest the place to start, if the car has been Ford dealer serviced, especially if the repair was done by a Ford dealer, is a complaint to Ford at Contact Us

If the car has not been serviced by a Ford dealer this may be the time to bite the bullet, go to a Ford dealer and ask for a quote to fix the problem

Car is '06 reg. I've never taken it to the Ford dealer for servicing. I was debating whether to just bite the bullet and go to Fords, or another dealer (non-Ford) who I trust and has worked on my car in the past.
