What I read indicated that it was triggered by patterns in the ABS and steering sensors.  e.g. the back wheels weren't rolling but the front was moving at speed.  Something that shouldn't ever happen in real life.  

I would suspect that any update will simply remove the offending code that triggers this low emissions test mode.  If they bork road performance or economy they'll be sued from here to Hawaii and back.

Thinking about it, it might have to be a bit more sophisticated assuming it also affects 4WD VWs?

My phone had a text on Saturday night from an unknown number, it read:

Have you been sold an Audi Tdi?
If so you may be in line for compensation.

Seems my son had a funny moment and used his mate's phone. As I told him today a second class ride is better than a first class walk.

Audi have a checker on their DE site btw, UK VIN works and will tell you in German whether affected.

My Audi A4 Black Edition (2015) is.

Balls, I just want to know if I can hand back the keys now if the fix applied knackers the performance.

Can't really see how they can make the cars test legal compliant without reducing power /torque/mpg .

Will have to see what happens when the first owners  have their cars corrected .

As posted earlier, it appears to be that the naughty software knocked it into a special emissions map if it sensed the back wheels weren't moving.
(IE the car's front wheels are on rollers in a lab).
So unless an owner drives around with the back wheels locked, the car will never go onto this map, as I understand it.
Again though, not sure how this affects 4WD models, as emissions tests for those must surely have all four wheels all rollers...

This i think is the main issue.

We all know VW will resolve the problem in terms of "Fixing" it, just exactly what impact that has on the car itself in terms of performance is another matter.

While i hope VW will acknowledge that and simply allow returns, as the vehicle itself no longer meets the specification for which it was purchased... I don't think they will, instead opting to battle class actions. Which is frustrating.

I've rung Audi, they've taken my details and said will update me as currently they have zero information. I've also contacted a solicitors who is currently collecting details for a possible class action.

They say they have been transparent - but they really haven't.. They've got "Oops, we've made a huge mistake" but that isn't surprising when they've been caught out, no other way for them to react.. The real test is how they deal with the fix and potential impact on their customers.

Returns seems pretty optimistic - presumably they will be permitted/required to offer the 'fix' to restore the emissions levels (and reduce the mpg).

If there are returns, there would then be the calculation of how much refund to give back given the use the customer has had of the car.  i.e. taking them off people for current trade-in type price.

But they can't do this - legally speaking... As it violates consumer protection laws.

As i said though - many companies completely ignore it and instead opt to address only upon legal action.

As far as the law goes - i'm well within my right to return the vehicle and have my deposit (fully / partially) refunded on my personal lease if the fix they provide impacts the stated performance at the time of purchase.
