Remapping worth it and where?

I'm in the north west and own a 2015  Volkswagen Passat GT 2.0 diesel 150bhp, I believe a remap will take it to 190ish bhp with boat loads of torque and better economy.

This being my first diesel is it worth the £200-£300 cost and there's so many options of boxes, chips, remaps and then there's finding someone trustworthy!

Should be able to gain about 35HP and up the torque as well, as for someone trustworthy Promap Tuning in Chester is the place to go.

I wouldn't remap...I would use a box, they've got some resale value as well. I would use a reputable supplier like DTUK who've been in this business for a very long time.

I wouldn't use a box, i'd get a proper ECU map. Not sure if he does anything other than BMW, but Simon at E-maps always has good reviews.

It is always like the Xbox vs Playstation ones...

A proper ECU map specific for his car would simply not worth it for lets face it that low down the range standard engine. At the price range where it is worth it, an ECU map won't be anything more than a generic map that has been copied may thousands of times and be put on the vehicle by anyone who knows how to connect the laptop cable...There is no resale value, there is an alteration of the ECU, and there won't be any more gain....It will be exactly the same kind of parameters; fuel line pressure, boost, and timing. And possibly but not always a different throttle response...

At that end of the market I simply cannot see the benefit, just more negatives...

I remember in the past tuning boxes got a bad name due to some of them doing nothing more than dumping more fuel in. Remapping was seen as a better option. I assume tuning boxes have become more sophisticated. Also seen throttle tuning devices recently as well.

Ive a bluefin on my Focus, stock is 150hp, brought it upto 180hp and was v impressed. I went for a bluefin as i can revert back to 150hp stock when I sell it. This is a petrol engine btw. Not sure if fuel economy was any better as i installed it a month after I bought the car.

In the early days there was indeed some very bad ebay boxes, almost nothing more than a potentio meter in it and badly overfueling. You still see some doing this on the cheap or turning it up to high with this big plumes of smoke coming out when there is a load on the engine.

If you have a good one from DTUK there is no such worries and the same parameters altered. And yes indeed you can add a pedal box to change the throttle response as well.

This car is a keeper so I'd prefer a remap rather than a box.

Out of interest what do you think a remap gives you that a box doesn’t?
