Winter tyres being used in Summer gets my vote of being the material contributor to this issue.

Stuck the Michelin Cross Climates on the front 18 months ago. Never would have fitted winters myself but the price was the same as premium others and claimed better things winter and summer (no need to change). MPG went up.
