I went through a litle stage of using it when I had my black mini as it was re-mapped for some more horses and recomended to do it but now in my big boys car (even has cruise control) don't bother - doesn't seem worth it - although I do undertsand the need to look after engines that are meantfor some reving so could see the need for it in a type r or an evo

I've run my car on 95 and 97 and there was no noticeable difference in performance or economy.  The manual says both are fine to use.

The difference in cost may only be a few pence, but over a year that adds up to quite a lot of money.

Not strictly true as the Smart forfour BRABUS is designed to optimally run on super unleaded 98 ron, even the manual & inside petrol cap state 98 ron fuel only.

There's a side note in the manual that states the Smart forfour BRABUS will be able to run on 95 ron fuel but power is reduced from 177bhp to 164bhp.

If you bought your R from Japan then you may need higher RON. It is 100 as standard over there (or was a few years ago), and they therefore map accordingly. I think some people do find performance issues with souped up cars that they import over here and are run on 95.

All Japanese imports are run on 100 octane fuel and so will run less efficient on lower grade fuel.
If modified/turbo'd can cause serious problems with prolonged use.
ECU adjusts to suit the Fuel and that in turn results in lower performance.
With a civic , I wouldn't worry unless you can/want the luxury of running on high octane fuel.

I've had my Type R for just over 2 years and I've never put anything but 95 in it. Once it goes over 6000 rpm, I can't imagine I'd notice much difference if it was running on 98.

My Type-R usually runs on Shell Optimax but then again it does put out 284bhp at the fly

Can I notice the difference?? Not really although the chap that re-mapped the ecu said it would put out about 15-20 less ponies at the top end if run on normal fuel.

Sainsbury's super unleaded isn't worth the extra money, Tesco's and Shell is due to higher octane rating.
