He actually bought a 20 year old clio, which after driving was exactly the same as a brand new dacia, who'd a thunk it?

A Suzuki Vitara that's 18 months old but looks essentially new.
One lady owner in her late 40s who bakes cakes.
Got it booked in for detailing next month.

Why not buy something older and nicer?

No offence intended to any current or potential owners. It’s cheap basic transport and yes you get to have a new car on your drive with the certainty a new car warranty offers. It’s an old gen Renault which was poor the 1st time around. This is the car equivalent of purchasing white goods, it’s a car and goes from a to b, if this is what you want then great. I am biased and see all French mainstream cars like this, at least the Dacia is honest about what it is and does not to try to be anything else.

I have had one for a week on holiday and the stereo is decent quality, seats and plastics are hard wearing so it will stand up to abuse.

I would worry that being French means it will spend a large portion of its life being fixed but at least it will be done under warranty.

Nice summary

It's based on an old French design, not made in France

Edit: Dacia is apparently a subsidiary of Renault, so I might have to eat humble pie over that one

I subscribe to most mainstream car mags and none say it’s a terrible car. If purchased new it would likely lose 60% after 3 years, £4800 depreciation @ £8k new. That’s pretty cheap motoring with full support

I did consider buying a new Dacia as a second car. The specs. overall look good, but there was no petrol auto option, only diesel.
