Had to replace the Turbo Air Intake on the wife's Qashqai yesterday.  After the pipe spilt... see below.

Question is, how do I reset the red engine light on the dash?  Or would I need to take into a dealers?

One last question, am I right in assuming that just replacing the pipe should be enough and I don't need to do any extra steps, e.g. for removing anything like airlocks etc?

It may reset by itself after a few more restarts but if not it'll need plugging into the computer. May be cheaper to get a Bluetooth obd2 dongle and use an app like torque for android.

No need to do anything else, you cannot get airlocks replacing a turbo pipe.

The red light should go out by itself, but if it doesn't you could try having the brake and accelerator pedal  pressed whilst switching on the ignition then pressing the brake pedal a few times until it goes out.
If this doesn't work then you will probably need someone with a more sophisticated diagnostic kit than a standard OBD2 setup.

are all ODB2 dongles the same across car manufacturers?  So I could use it on both the wife's Nissan and my BMW?

Yup, obd2 is a generic standard. I have read/reset codes on Nissan, Renault, BMW, Toyota, Skoda, and Lotus with mine. I always carry a obd2 Bluetooth dongle in my car now, they only cost £5-10 of ebay. For BMW's there's an app called Carly for BMW, with it you can read faults and also code, I use to use it to monitor the status of my DPF.

Just a quick note on this...the OP stated that he had a red light showing which on these cars is the service light which is different than the engine management light.
The engine management light (orange/yellow) is covered by OBD2, the red service light is not.

I thought they showed orange when a fault was present and red when a serious fault was present so you shouldnt continue driving on a qashqai.

Orange is OBD2, red is another system. Vauxhall have similar...a red spanner and orange OBD2. You cannot reset the red spanner using OBD2 nor use any diagnostic system that isn't compliant...with Vauxhall, however, you can check faults not covered by OBD2 by pressing the accelerator and brake pedal with ignition on and counting flashes of the red light or on later vehicles the OBD2 light flashes and a code flashes up where the mileage is displayed....you cannot reset it that way. The system that Nissan is using with the red light is the Renault system.
