I'm another that struggles with some Stephen King, couldn't finish 'The Shining' and hated 'Insomnia'.  I read most of 'The Road' on a plane last year, misplaced my copy and couldn't be bothered re-reading it when I found it.   Made numerous attempts to start 'the Casual Vacancy', did eventually get into it but took 100 or so pages (I'm glad I did)

Stephen king is one of those authors that if you crack the first 100 or so pages you will get hooked.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. Tried it twice. Twice nearly stoppe dreathing as my brain shutdown...
The later stuff by Eddings when his wife started collaborating with him.

World War Z by Max Brooks tried to read it twice, just awful, hated it i just had to give up on it, everytime i read it i could never remember anything that happened when I read it before but I did like the Film.

Another here who has failed to get through Catch 22. Despite trying a number of times (not in recent years however), I never could keep the interest. Although appreciating this was something a bit special, I was not engaged by it.

This is the most diabolically boring book ever written. Not only will you put it down and not pick it up. You should burn it for good measure..

I know it's against the thread title but, you really ought to stick with The Stand as it is utterly brilliant and along with The Talisman is probably the best book King has ever written.

Yep, totally agree and said as much in the WWZ film forum. First half is okay but, then it juuuusssssttt dddrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggsss oooooooooooon quite inanely. The film which I expected to be complete pants is excellent though - go figure

I have not read The Talisman so cannot comment but I read The Stand in my early teens and it was a revelation King at the top of his game.

Catch-22 was woeful in my eyes, I finished it but really wish I hadn't bothered.

The Gormenghast trilogy I was given by my sister for a birthday killed me, only so much I can read about stones in a castle before I want to push my head through a wall.

Tolkien has bored me too, I don't care for the over-descriptive nature of his books, if a guy is wearing a green cloak he's wearing a green cloak, not a three quarter length mossy green cloak hemmed with........
