I finished the Gunslinger this weekend. Enjoyable enough, but I'm a little disappointed with how it ends - I had hoped each book might be a little more self contained. It almost demands reading The Drawing of the Three next (rather than reading any other book)

Are the rest of the books similar? or do any volumes end at a good place to take a break from the series?

I've read the first 4 books and they all follow on from the previous one. I think if you've read The Gunslinger then your pretty much locked into the complete series.

They are a very good series but definitely not on the level of LoTR, agreed.

The last book was a bit of a letdown ... a lot of threads were left unresolved or tied up too abruptly or unbelievably.  Also, a fairly major contradiction to what we had been lead to believe from a related novel by King (with a hand-wavy excuse for it).  But the actual 'resolution' was sound enough, probably about the best you could reasonably expect given the amount of anticipation which had built up amongst fans.

King did freely admit that he was making it up as he went along and almost letting the books write themselves.  If he had died in that accident with the van I think that the Dark Tower series (to that point) would have achieved legendary status.

I don't know how well they would translate to the big screen - not very well, I suspect.  Certainly a lot of reworking needed to make them work as a movie and you'd need a series of lengthy films too, to do the whole tale justice.

I was stuck in Edinburgh Airport on Sunday so, remembering this thread, I popped into WHSmith to see if they had them and they did, books 2-7 only   Oh well... maybe another time.

I read them as they were published, and it did feel at the time that the story was evolving with time as he had new ideas and plots. Enjoyed them and if you have read his other books, then the references are not only there to spot, but often integral to the story.

Question for the people that have read all seven books: do you regret reading the last three? do you wish you had stopped after reading Wizard and Glass?

I saw a tiny bit of a reader review (which I hope is not too much of a spoiler, but I won't repeat it) The reviewer strongly disliked the introduction of a character which ruined their enjoyment of the final books and soured the whole series. Anyone else feel this way?

I finished The Waste Lands last night and whilst I was planning on taking a break before reading Wizard and Glass it got really good towards the end and I wanted to see how the cliff hanger was resolved straight away so now I'm on to the next one.
