What's the best Batman graphic novel/comic to start with?

For me a good starting Batman based list (Ignoring Catwoman and Batgirl etc) and cherry picking good titles (which will still cost you a good fair (~£300) amount of cash to snap up in Trade Paperback form)

I recommend sticking to this reading order as well - well at least from Death in the Family onwards anyway.

.......then into the DC52 stuff.

I didnt really like Batgirl or Catwoman stuff until the new DC52, but Batgirl Year 1 is really good.

personally I found Year One a snorefest and Arkham Asylum not much better.

If you fancy a bit of movie universe crossover Batman stuff, Batman vs Aliens and Batman vs predator (3 volumes) are excellent, fast paced one off stories which aren't bogged down by continuity.
