It's just the latest in a long line of dumb European ideas. From the people who gave us communism, fascism and ITV.

It's been a top-down, anti-democratic concept from the start. Sure it gained territory by buying off the political class in former countries rather than by military force, but it's no less expansionist & invasive than any other wannabe empire. The sooner it's consigned to the dustbin of history the better.

Eh? It doesn't need to be replaced with anything. Bring back the individual nation states.

We can specifically thank Gordon Brown. Together with granting independence to the BOE, it is the most historically sound decision he ever made- proof that generally everybody will get at least something right.

Labour- Blair especially- was pretty pro-Euro at the time.

Brown (and Balls) only said no to **** off Tony Blair, not because of any great strategic insight. Brown is the PM who stole in like a thief in the night to sign the Lisbon Treaty don't forget.

It might have worked if they had only roped in western European countries, but even then the bureaucracy and BS is so wasteful (and powerful) it was likely to fail over the long term.

Also, there is possible hidden agenda in the whole EU concept with regard to Germany and France - but who knows?

The Greek people are suffering severe austerity measures (not like the token gestures occurring in the UK - you know, the ones that you so vociferously moan about) and all because the politicians involved fail to acknowledge their dream of a European superstate is in ruins and can't ever work.

How can you justify keeping Greece in the Euro given how the people are currently suffering, which can only get worse?

It's very much a Franco-German club. Or at least the French like to see it that way. Everyone else is second or third rate after that.

You know, I used to agree with you about the BoE independence. But now I look back... What has it achieved for us? Inflation above target for years now, slow growth, etc. If anything, wasn't it the BoE being made independent and the formation of the FSA with gaps in the tripartite regulatory regime a big contributor to the banking crash?
