An interesting discussion and I learned something new. Naturally air passenger duty doesn't pay towards safety, firefighters, maintenance etc...Yet it is a significant part of the cost of the tickets...

What I found interesting reading up on it, that if you didn't have a flexible ticket, yet still need to cancel, you should be able to get the tax element back from the ticket as that is not payable unless the 'seat' actually flies....I wonder how many 'budget' fixed ticket airlines actually keep that part for themselves

No one is foregoing anything. That's all in the £264 ticket price I quoted, not the extras.
The £389 extra fee is high because it is Heathrow. Standsted has much lower fees but maintains the same safety standards and fire engines

Airport firefighters and tarmac on the runways are paid for by the airport owners and not the taxpayers. Airports get their money from landing fees paid by the airlines not the tax that is added onto the price of a ticket - that goes to the Exchequer.

And I was making a joke it could be even cheaper if not for pesky safety regulations
I'm sure a lot of taxpayers money has been spent on looking at expanding Heathrow and Gatwick, with the decision seemingly to be just around the corner, no not that Corner, the next one.

What's the volume of air traffic and air freight at each Airport ?

For those interested about electric planes for short haul flights (by short less than 2 hours) - EasyJet says it could be flying electric planes within a decade

I only wish he could take us back to the 70s.  In spite of the 3 day week, power cuts, candles, tele off at 22:00 etc. that was a great decade.  Great music, iffy fashions, workers had real power and weren't afraid to flex their muscles.

I simply loved the 1970s.  ♫ Oh Jeremy Corbyn ♫

Unfortunately that complacency in the 1970s enabled the Trade Union shop stewards and above to become too powerful without the responsibility. In turn that enabled Thatcher to pull down the Trade Unions in the 1980s and her government became too powerful and caused much damage to the future fabric of life in the UK.

1970s government senior politicians complacency tied with big business bosses complacency and general public lack of concern resulted in a lot of damage - but then that is hindsight and like most people I have 20/20 vision when it comes to hindsight.

I wouldn't argue with much of what you say, though on a personal level I much preferred society then to society now on so many levels.
