In what way? They all need housing, they all add additional burdens onto an already over stretched NHS and education services, they all claim benefits from a state that already has a massive deficit.

No. I'm simply saying that if refugees have to seek asylum in the first country they arrive in then that would lead to all refugees having to stay in EU border countries which would prevent non-border countries from taking their agreed quotas. It doesn't work.

I'm not suggesting anything else. I understand this is an emotive subject but please don't attribute things to me that I haven't implied. The first coutry rule doesn't work. Simple.

Yes but that's now how they're defined. And governments agree to take in certain quotas of refugees. A refugee is defined as a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. Disagreeing with taking in refugees is a different discussion to the process of resettlement.

What "agreed quota" is that then? Who agrees this quota? The EU? I don't think so. How would such a quota be decided? On GDP? Current population per sq Kilometre? Who decides on the merits of their claim? Why should any country accept migrants because the EU has decided to run a taxi service across the Med?  How would you allocate migrants to each country ? What happens if some of migrants allocated to say Roumania don't want to go to Roumania, because it's a boghole/their cousin is in the UK/their friend is in Germany?

I don't think you have really thought this through, have you?

Unless I'm mistaken the governments of each country agree their quotas.

Semantics.

And how many "refugees" is the UK committed to accepting? I wasn't aware we had a specific quota.

So if Hungary and Poland say "sod off, we are not taking any", who takes their quota then?? I'm not aware of the UK agreeing to take any quota of immigrants/refugees.asylum seekers whatever you want to call them.

In that case those countries wouldn't have a quota. I'm talking about agreed quotas.

So every country can agree not to have a quota. So how does your system work then?

What you are describing is pretty much the status quo. You really hadn't though this through, had you/

In 2015 David Cameron agreed to the UK accepting 20000 Syrian refugees. There's one specific quota. If you want the entire breakdown of our overall commitments you'll have to look it up yourself.
