Hi, so I’m looking to change my lifestyle to hopefully build muscle/lose fat. I see the term ‘skinny fat’ thrown around a lot and I’d probably use that label to describe myself as I’m generally slim but still carry fat on some parts of my body, which is particularly noticeable when I’m sitting down. What do you guys think, am I skinny fat or just plain skinny? I’m 5’11, 140lbs and 21 years old. (Pics attached)

Either way, can you guys give me some tips to get me started? How many calories should I be eating? What macros should I be eating? What excercises should I focus on?

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't worry too much about any labels. If you are not happy about your body, go and do something about it. Depending on what your goal is, if you want to get bigger and put on some muscle, you need a good base. Especially at the beginning, it is not that important what exercise you do (full body workout will do). What is important is that you do them on regular basis, do them well with proper form and intensity, eat well, sleep well and keep it simple.

As Adrian said - keep it simple. Also I would stay away from fat food too. I don't know if you're eating any but speaking from experience, it really helped me when I've started to control my diet a bit more. Good results come much faster.

Anyway, you're faaar from "skinny-fat"

Yes you are skinny fat. You are very light for your height but no six pack and moobs. However it doesn’t matter, no one is perfect and you are young. Get lifting and you can get muscular and ripped. I would recommend a basic beginner program like stronglifts. Add some pull-ups though. If you are lifting consistently and can try your best to cut out sugar, you’ll start getting there. Consistency is the key. Keep at it.

I think being skinny fat has more to do with looking healthy on the outside but not so much the inside - high cholesterol, triglycerides... the best person to consult about this is probably a physician.
