My 160w dripbox came with Clapton coils preinstalled. How can I identify the material the coil is made from, in order to select the correct mode on the mod.

In case it helps, here's a close up of the coil:

Is that the supllied 0.2ohm clapton? If so that is a kanthal and not compatible with TC mode.
Will be either able to buy ni200, Ti or ss316 premade decks or be able to build them yourself with suitable wire more likely has tc mode there for any possible builds.
Looks like the deck is big but coil installing is quite tricky, fun tho lol

Yes it is the supplied 0.2 Clapton. Only started using it the day before yesterday. When the kit turned up I still had a fairly fresh deck in my original dripbox, so I used that.

I find that at my usual 80w they have a very long ramp up (compared to the standard 0.2 coils) & if I increase the wattage a lot they spit like a camel! Due to this I was thinking that tc would be better for them.

I did try the deck in ni tc mode as a test last night & it did work, (in that it delivered me nicotine & did work a lot better than power mode) it wouldn't calibrate however. Is there any danger in doing this?

Not really sure tbh just may not be working like it should with that wire.
Tc mode usually little longer to ramp up (unless can set power along with it)  but not much, but also longer draws required. Wasn't really for me imo.

See if can double check that clapton is kanthal. Im kinda sure it is tho. And if does not state it is ni200 anywhere in manual then it 100% would be kanthal as they couldn't not say and risk people using ni200 in power mode which is dodgy.

You can't set the power, it's automatic. When this box is put into tc mode it displays the maximum 160w, when the fire button is pressed I can then see it automatically adjusting the wattage to give a constant temp. Ramp up to me seemed much quicker than using it in power mode.

Nowhere does it state the coil material so based on what you say it must be kanthal then.

U can take the biggest of vapes in TC mode as it dont get any hotter, personally i dont think it any better, prefer power mode if im honest. Only tried the uwell crown Ni coil in temp mode.

Don't know why they didn't do the stock clapton in 316 stainless as that can be used in either power or TC mode and experience both from stock, or at least supllied a TC coil. Would have made more sense.

Sometimes companies just do not think, Triton mini for example, too airy for the nautilus style coils (which it uses) and don't even work well with them set with tight draw which is too hard to set well it's just different but the intended use must be the ni200 coils and they not even supply one in the box to try lol
Look into building coils on the deck, could even buy pre made and just few tweaks to get in.
Only got a fishbone RDA but is a total pain to build, may have to get another proper RDA (was thinking Tsunami RDA) and have another go as not really a fan but don't want to give up either.

I already use my full lung capacity so can't get any larger vape, this is with the air intake at about 80-90% open.

You have a good point, is there a price difference between ss& kanthal wire? If there it then they probably want to save cost when mass producing.

I will try building myself at some point, it's just so much quicker & easier to use pre-built
