Whats the rig for  gaming , editing ?
what ram are you carrying over , ( ryzen loves fast ram , so anything over 3200mhz )
how old is your PSU and what wattage  is it ?
might as well ask what GPU it is too ?

Yep, and is it ddr4 ram?

If the rig is gaming only then that processor is likely overkill unless paired with a 2080/ti

Thanks for the replies

Gpu is a 1080ti, power supply is a Corsair 750w that is about 4 to 5 years old. Current ram is 4x 4g ddr 4 3000mhz

Usage is gaming and doing work/business related stuff.

I do wonder if I should drop to the 3800x, the 3900x is to make it as future proof as possible as I tend to upgrade on a 4 to 5 years bases.

4x4 3000 is going to restrain any ryzen CPU , duel is what you want best , ( 2x8gb  would be the better option )

750w PSU is good enough , but seen as it now 4/5 years ( and it has know for PSU's to last a lot longer ) might be worth picking up a new one ,

might not be  what you want to hear , but having spending a good amount of money on CPU and mobo the last thing you want is the system to go down with an old PSU in a year or so's time .

well at least consider picking up a new one sooner than later ..

The ram is something that I do plan to upgrade when I have more money, but for now I can live with it.

I’ll take your advice and change the power supply though as I have had a power unit blow up on me in past.

Many thanks for the help

What model of PSU is it? Higher end Corsair PSU's (RX, HX, AX) came with a 7 or even 10 year warranty. So should do you another few years yet. Lower end models (CS, CX, TX) you should replace as sykotic suggested.

It’s a H something if I remember right (can’t check it to the weekend), cost roughly 100 to 120 at the time.

The previous one blew up so I did go for a decent one, I was planning on opening the power supply unit up and giving it a good clean out before refitting

Then if its a HX750 you should be fine they come with a 10 year warranty and are considered among the best PSU's available. I have one myself and a HX850 in an 8 year old build I use as a NAS/media server which runs 14 hours a day with no issues.

If it's an HX750, there should be no need to replace it for a few years yet. By all means remove the cover and clean it. Check the capacitors are in good order with no bulging or leaks. Make sure the PSU has been switched off for a good 10 minutes - but leave it plugged in with the socket switched off so it is properly earthed.
