Right looking at this one at the moment, is there much of a difference these days between an ips or an tn panel. ?

Viewing angles and colour accuracy. IPS tends to react slower but are more accurate and better viewing angles. TNs are fast but have worse viewing angles and colour accuracy.
Some of the IPS panels have some pretty poor uniformity with quite bad clouding.

Thanks, not the best reviews by far, and that was just scanning through them, right better stick to a Tn panel then, must admit my Acer has been very good, so maybe look at some Acer monitors then, quite like the Dell too you posted, so that one isnt out of the race yet.

A lot of the gaming monitors like that Asus use the same panel and so share the same issues, which really put me off them. It's not always easy to track down which ones have the same panel - but the specs can maybe give some hints.

The only major differences between Freesync and G-Sync is that G-Sync settled on certain features like LFC (low frame rate compensation for sub VRR range frame rates) and ULMB (ultra low motion blur reduction) as part of the default package, Freesync left these up to the monitor maker along with the VRR range which makes them cheaper.

Given the kinds of game you mention these features are not super essential to you if you keep your frame rate within the VRR range of the monitor.

For example this Freesync Acer for £339 has a VRR range of 40-144Hz, IPS panel and also LFC support too.

This G-Sync Acer for £499 is 1440p 27" has a VA panel, this G-Sync AOC £548 for a 144hz IPS panel.

Unless your big into super competitive PvP gaming TN panels are not that necessary so I'd go with an IPS display but TN panels are cheaper.

Rough Nvidia buying guide for Freesync monitors not on Nvidia's own G-Sync compatible list.
* Must have Displayport connection as this is the only connection you can enable G-Sync compatible with.
* Anything that is TN or IPS panel should be fine, avoid VA panels unless they are on Nvidia's compatible list as some VA panels have flashing issues, can be worked around but not worth the hassle.
* Use AMD's Freesync database to narrow down choices based on what you want or can afford.

I have the - Gigabyte AORUS AD27QD 27" 2560x1440 144Hz IPS FreeSync/G-Sync Tactical Gaming Monitor HDMI DP on son's rig, very good monitor.

Also well spoken of is the LG LG 27GL850-B 27" 2560x1440 NANO IPS 144Hz 1ms FreeSync/G-Sync Compatible Widescreen LED Gaming Monit

(spent many hours researching this very subject a few weeks ago!). EDIT: personally I've noticed the difference on Gsync and non-Gsync panels, I'd always go for something that supports it.
