you must use a null modem cable. These are wired differently to a normal rs232.

Thanks for the very quick reply.  I will give it a try:  I found a "Cables To Go - 52040 - 15ft DB9 F/F Null Modem Cable" which I will order.  I'll let you know if this one works.  Thanks.

Thanks, alnwrd, for your advice.  He-heh!  I'm happy now.  I had to try both serial ports on the PC, and reboot, but finally got it working.  I was able to paste in all of my song titles in one night.  This is so cool.  I do highly recommend this Yamaha machine, but I do wish they would come out with a new version more appropriate for the 21st century, with USB 2.0, better software, backup options, etc.

I am new to this forum. I have two CDR1500's as I find them excellent for storing music. There versatility really comes into focus when they are used with a DBX compressor expander. The idea being to record sounds using the analog inputs however initially compressed with DBX. On playback the DBX is switched to Expand. A simple test of this this afternoon reveals improvements vs the original CD.  The CDR1500 performs well as a recorder but is a top flight recorder when used with DBX encoding and decoding. In comparison the Digital inputs SPDIF and Toslink rearrange the sound much for the worse.

Can you tell me where you found out that the 1500 is discontinued? I spoke with a rep at Yamaha USA this morning and she said it was still in the catalogue and in stock. I actually hoped that they might be coming out with a new model with USB plugs and easier back up facility but not according to the Yamaha rep. Haven't bought one yet but would like one, so far seems to be the best unit for the money.

The Yamaha UK website shows that the CDR HD1500 has been discontinued (in their discontinued products page).

Hi, wonder why this unit shows up in the discontinued product list in the UK (but only shows the Titanium colour model). I spoke to a sales rep at Yamaha USA and she said the unit was still available.

Need someone at Yamaha head office to give us the straight goods. If they were going to replace it with a "1700" with USB etc that would be great, otherwise guess I need to commit and buy a 1500 while there still are some.
Anyone else have any more info?

Further listening tests confirms using a DBX to compress recording using the analog inputs on the CDR HD 1500, and then playback using expand on the DBX is easily the best investment you will ever make with audio front end gear ....well you will have to try it.

Some detail of equipment: The DBX is a 150x using 50 ohm coax as interconnects between its phone plugs and RCA plugs. In this configuration it is unbalanced audio - the DBX also allows balanced connections. In theory CD offers 100db of audio capture. The DBX150x expands that to about 120db
For listening tests we used  a modified CD50 Marantz to record on to the HD1500 -  see

Playback was using a Audio Synthesis Passion preamp into Martin Logan Quest Z   Amplification was Quad 909 for top end panels and Quad 405 for bass - the 405 phase inverts so speaker leads were reversed.

The dynamics listening to Jeff Beck Who Else  were nearly hard to comprehend just how much was going on in that recording. As said before this path of HD1500 compressing initially from a DBX and then expanding back through a DBX is well worth the effort of recording real time all your favourite CD's.  The only improvement could be to have the musicians call round personally - and that could be a bit hard with Hendrix Frank Zappa and Miles Davis let alone Mozart .  

If Yamaha ever release another HD recorder can I suggest they build a DBX compressor and expander into it. In the mean time a DBX such as the old 117 118 119 or 150x or BX series should be on your shopping list in fact any DBX that compresses and expands should work. The 150x is very easy to set and forget - some of the other DBX models allow variable compression rates and expansion rates.  I look forward to hearing from anyone trying this.

Thanks for sharing us with suggestions for a "new 1500". Most unlikely that Yamaha read this forum in order to create something new.
It's my opinion that this forum is ment to help anyone with "problems". Send your suggestions to Yamaha to keep this thread interesting for any Yamaha-user with a CDR-HD1500
