I'm trying to do something to monitor an elderly person at home and would welcome suggestions for products/solutions. I'm thinking along the lines of motion detectors in some of the rooms, possibly a digital watch or wristband with fall detection, and a Google or Amazon device (for voice commands).

There is a home LAN/WiFi network, fibre Internet, z-wave home automation (OpenHAB), and security system (currently external video).

Any thoughts?

At mum’s house we had a council run service which cost about £4 a month. Mum had a pendant around her neck which she could press . This would automatically dial a centre and if they couldn’t make contact with her via the loud speaker which the pendant was connected to it would call us. Sadly mum passed away at the of July but she pressed it before she did and I was with her within 25 minutes due to her pressing this even if we were unable to do anything to save her .

There's a couple of camera based systems that do the image processing in the camera and only send warning data rather than pictures - unless requested.

These are being fitted to airports and can detect everything from someone falling over, unusual buildups of crowds, even unaccompanied children. It's based on shape recognition and a clever little learning algorithm and has fairly low processor overheads.

I don't think they have released the cameras for other markets as yet, but it's possible that you could use an Open MV camera to do something similar? Small - Affordable - Expandable

It might be the case that Apple watch has fall detection functionality. I'm not sure about the battery life?
