Hi,
If you are insured with a company and they say they go by spec when matching for a replacement, would that raise alarms with you ?

What if you got out your crystal ball and looked to the future to the day your beloved camcorder dies and they insist on Model X saying it matches spec and they use spec alone, note the 'alone' word you are now aware of.

Considering just exposure and focus here, which are crucial to you..

you look at your spec sheet and it says focus  auto/manual, as does Model X
and it says Shutter aperture gain auto/Manual for yours and also model X

happy so far ?

what if yours was Full manual control and S A and G could be set independent of each other, focus ring was a separate ring to the dial for S A G.  spec sheet still correct wasnt it !

What if on Model X only one of S A or G at any one time could be set fixed value manually, and it had a focusing ring that did focus as well as S A G needing buttons pressed to get to the value to be adjusted, still correct wasnt it. What if worse still focusing was via a small wheel, still correct wasnt it.

However if you had bought yours for the Full manual control and separate focusing ring crucial to your filming and have to accept their offering as it matched on spec, now what do you do ?

what if you make mention of your better controls and need for them, and get told :-
Exposure controls are irrelevant and features/controls don't count, what then ?

What if you were proud of your device and had mentioned these controls to the agent you get to speak to, not the replacement team though, and heard nothing to cause you doubt, over the years when renewing policy, because they want you to renew or they themselves dont know what their replacement team get up to, what then ?

What if yours cost £1000 and Model X cost £300 ten years later, oh but its newer so quality would be better, you are told, even if now you cant film your subject matter anymore without those expensive Full manual control exposure settings and adjust focus whilst having immediate access to aperture should light change.

What then.
Still happy ?

is spec with disregard to exposure controls/ features and what you used to film with it , a suitable way of replacing a camcorder ?

I suggest being positive. Choose your replacement camcorder. Say that time has created newer and better units but that your choice is as close to the original unit as you can find.
Example:- If you trashed your old car but requested like for like, your new car would have many extras not found on your old model, power steering, air-con, auto parking etc.
