Hi, hope I don't sound too stupid but I need some advice. I am about to buy a new desk top computer running windows 10. My old one is running windows 7 using windows live for my internet. I am with talktalk. How do I set up my internet on my new computer. It is such a long time ago when I had to do this I have forgotten how (senior moments, 80 years old) Simple answers please.

Regards

How are you connected to the internet currently? Is it via a cable or wirelessly?

If it is via a cable, you would simply connect this cable that goes to your Windows 7 PC to your Windows 10 PC. The internet will then start working on your new PC with no setup to do at all.

If it is wirelessly (and you need to check that the new computer can do wireless as not all desktops come with that feature), then you would simply connect your PC to the TalkTalk wireless network. Depending on how the PC arrives, this is either done through the initial setup which will happen the first time you turn it on, or if it is already setup, you would just click the network icon on the bottom right of the taskbar and select the TalkTalk network and enter the TalkTalk wireless network password.

My 85 year old Dad wouldn't even know how to turn a PC on!

Thank for replying so quickly Greg and I won't tell your Dad what you said.
I am connected by cable and what you say has relieved some of the tension of setting up a new computer. However, what program do they use now, because I understand Windows Live is no longer available. It seems each time there is a program that works ok and is clear and easy to use the powers that be decide to get rid of it and put some difficult item in its place.

I’m not familiar with what windows live was, but you don’t need any programs running or setup to connect to the internet.

I would recommend Sophos Home which is a free anti virus programme.

Sorry my mistake, not internet. Windows Live is/was part of a program that sends and receives email. As my research has shown windows 10 comes with a "light" email program but I think windows live can still be used. Just something I have got used to, still, never too old to learn something new. Thanks for your help.

Have a nice Christmas

Ah ok, yes windows 10 does come with an email program. I’ve never used it as I just buy office 2016 from eBay for £8 or similar which has outlook with it.

Have a great Christmas too.

Windows Live was actually a full suite of programs, including Windows Live Messenger (formerly known as MSN), Windows Movie Maker, Photo Gallery and the Live Mail that you're talking about.

Mail is the latest interation of the free Windows e-mail program. What used to be Outlook Express, then became Windows Mail, then Live Mail and is now just Mail.

Live Mail may run on Windows 10, but it hasn't had any security updates for getting on for two years so I wouldn't recommend it.

Many people these days check their e-mail through their e-mail provider's website (known as webmail) so you could also explore that option.

I agree with EndlessWaves, most email providers use a web page to provide access to email, otherwise just set up windows mail to receive your emails. Windows mail is clever enough to set up most mail accounts automatically as long as you know your email and password

Hi David G. Seem to be having some difficulty understanding what I should to be able to click on an app to open my email account as I do with Windows Live on my old computer. With my new computer it has an app in the shape of an envelope, when I click on it it offers me the option to add a new account etc. the choice it gives is outlook.com, Live.com, Hotmail, MSN. next are exchange, Google cloud and other. When I choose the first option I am faced with the choice of entering my email address then "send messages with this name and then enter password. I don't have outlook or any of the others. Which one should I choose. I am able to go on the web and on to my talktalk account and then open my mail but it is so long winded. Any advice would be welcome
