Following on from another thread re AMD vs Intes for a video editing PC.

I have concluded that my hand is tied to Intel as I want to use a mATX motherboard and there are non for Threadripper.

So, I assume I will be looking at Z390 motherboards.

In the mATX range there are one of two to choose from however 4 dimm slots and 2 m.2 ports are important.  The BIOS must be comprehensive for overclocking as well

Choices are:

ASUS TUF Z390M-Pro Gaming Intel Z390 (Socket 1151) DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard

ASROCK Z390M Pro4 Intel Z390 (Socket 1151) DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard

MSI MPG Z390M GAMING EDGE AC (Socket 1151) DDR4 MATX Motherboard

Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming Intel Z390 (Socket 1151) DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard

Gigabyte

Is there a real need for matx? You need a board with decent VRM if you are overclocking. also good airflow, a quick look on scan shows pretty weak boards in both z370/90 for matx. I changed recently from a an Asus prime A to a Maximus Formula (to watercool the VRM's). The overclocking ability of the boards is like night and day. I am able to run an 8700k at 5.2mhz @70 degrees flat out using handbrake converting 4k to 1080p H.265. As a daily driver i just run it at 5mhz and it never gets higher than 60 degrees. I have delidded of course.
IMO a decent cpu thats not cheap needs a quality board to unleash its power. The Asus Maximus range are all quality.
