I’m currently running an i5 Skylake and now getting more into video editing (1080 and 4K) and photo editing so thinking that I need to go i7 for the benefit of hyper threading. i’m Also out of touch with the latest tech re CPU’s and MOBO’s.

I’m running a 2k monitor and have a gtx 1070 gpu. I only really play battlefield, so gaming is not a major concern.

Would upgrading the CPU to a Coffee lake i7 with associate MOBO (hoping the Skylake RAM will be re-usable) be a worthwhile upgrade or should I just hang on for a newer gen CPU?

All thoughts and opinions welcomed, thanks

Obviously with your current newish high end CPU you can't expect huge performance jumps. A top of the range model might just deliver twice the performance, if your video editing software can use the extra cores (a big if).

I wouldn't call that a particularly big jump personally but how much it's worth it to you depends on how much you value your time.

If your current system DDR4 or DDR3L? Skylake supported both.

I agree with EW, you should see an upgrade in performance but it is unlikely to be a massive one.
I do video editing and upgraded from a Sandy Bridge to Coffee Lake i7 system and also went from onboard graphics to using a GTX1060 and I did see a fairly good improvement. Your upgrade will be smaller but I went from an i7 to i7 so you are likely (software permitting) to see a benefit going from an i5 to i7 as hyper threading can speed up rendering a fair bit (again emphasising that it is software dependent).

Mark.
