So i would have to put its own OS on and just map my drives to the Z600 and then add them to my Plex library.

Yes or if you are not doing any transcoding just run Plex on the Microserver, plenty of people do as far as I know.  (I didn't personally because I don't use Plex)

Yep alternatively look for the N54L model as that was a 2.2GHz processor vs 1.5GHz in the N40L (the N36L had a 1.3GHz)

Assuming original box it should be under a tenner shipped with something like Collect , drop off a local store delivered direct to you.

The N54L are going for nearer £100 on eBay depending on spec.

I'll add my vote for the hp microserver. I have the older gen8 model and it's been a great investment. It's running plex without problems and i've been extremely happy with it.

I've got a Gen8 microserver and the Icybox JBOD enclosure @ChuckMountain linked to, connected via a cheap eSata card. Been working will for a couple of years now. The Icybox enclosure has a strange power connector, so replacing it (if the need ever came up) might be tricky.

Worth bearing in mind the eSata is only Sata-II speed, not Sata-III and I can never get more than 50MB/s to or from drives in this enclosure. Probably the el-cheapo eSata card I bought rather than the enclosure. Not a problem for streaming across the local network but does make copying files a little slower.
